J. Barrett Shipp
J. Barrett Shipp is a shareholder and Vice President at Heinrichs & De Gennaro, P.C. His practice is directed at probate administration as well as probate, guardianship, trust, and fiduciary litigation. He represents clients in probate administration, heirship determinations, will contests, trust disputes, actions by and against executors, administrators, and trustees, and on behalf of estate and trust beneficiaries, and in power-of-attorney litigation, declaratory judgment, creditor, trust modification and termination actions.
Barrett received his Bachelor of Science in Political Science at Oklahoma State University in 2004 and earned his law degree at St. Mary's University School of Law in 2007. While at St. Mary's, he was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta; Vice-Chair of The Board of Advocates; and a staff writer for The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Minority Issues receiving credit with honors for his law review comment. He also received a Dean's Leadership Award.
Barrett was previously in private practice and then served as an Assistant Criminal District Attorney in the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office, including working in the Appeals Division. Barrett is a member of the San Antonio Bar Association and the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association, having served on its Board of Directors since 2012, most recently as President (2015-2016). He is also a member of the St. Mary's University School of Law Young Alumni Council, the Legal Writing Institute, the William S. Sessions Inn of Court, and is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.
He regularly volunteers with pro bono efforts including the Community Justice Program, and enjoys participating in the South Central Texas Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel "Ethics Follies" CLE program. His peers nominated him as one of San Antonio's "Rising Stars" in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and as a "Best Lawyer" in 2014 in the fields of Probate Law and Estate and Trust Litigation in the San Antonio Scene magazine. He lives in the Northwood area with his wife, Mo, their son, Foster, their daughter, Hattie Jane, and their miniature schnauzer, Sgt. Pepper.
